Dental Problems
Local Support
Dental abscess
A dental abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection, which can develop inside a tooth, in the gums, or in the bone supporting the teeth.
Abscesses can be very painful, but sometimes they’re not. Either way, you should see a dentist as soon as possible, abscesses will not go away on their own and can sometimes spread, causing more serious illness.
If you have a dental abscess, seek dental care promptly. If you develop severe pain, swelling, difficulty swallowing, breathing problems, or feel very unwell, seek urgent medical attention or call NHS 111.
Dental pain / toothache
See a dentist if you have a toothache lasting more than 2 days. While waiting for an appointment, you can try to ease the pain with over-the-counter painkillers, avoiding very hot or cold foods, and keeping the area clean.
If your pain is severe, you have swelling, or you feel unwell, contact a dentist or NHS 111 for advice.
